WE’VE BEEN CARING FOR THE FAMILIES OF MARLBOROUGH SINCE 1869.

By Celeste Lodewyk Droves of duck shooters will be heading out tomorrow for the opening of the duck shooting season which runs until July 27. Local boy Will Porter will be among them as it is an annual tradition he never misses. Will first experienced duck shooting at age two and said he plans to get out this season “every morning for the first week”. When Will isn’t duck shooting he will be selling supplies to other duck shooters where he works at Hunting & Fishing in Blenheim. Continued page 2

Duck shooting season opens Continued from page 1 For everyone else heading out this weekend, Marlborough Police are reminding people to take extra caution. Tasman District Firearms Officer Senior Constable Peter Crins said it was important hunters practiced good firearms

safety and were aware of the impacts of their activity on nearby residents. He said every year police received complaints from people about shooting close to residential areas at the start of the season. “People engaging in other

recreational activities also need to be aware that hunters may be in the area at this time of year,” he said Hunters are also reminded that it is an offence against the Arms Regulations 1992 to leave firearms unattended in vehicles. “Keep this in mind when you

are out using firearms as we’ve had to deal with a couple of these incidents recently.” The Game Bird Hunting Guide Regulations and Hunting Areas can be viewed at: hunting.fishandgame.org.nz

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Superman flies into town By Kristy Martin Blenheim residents were surprised and delighted to see Superman shooting faster than a speeding bullet through the streets of the CBD yesterday. Superman, aka Paul Brown from Christchurch, was on his way to Auckland with brother Angus, promoting his Facebook page ‘Reallife-Realtalk with Paul Brown’. Paul, who has over 5000 likes on his page, says he travels around New Zealand making YouTube videos about real people, particularly those who have overcome hard times. Wearing the Superman costume was a symbol of hope and giving out chocolate to strangers was a way of helping people remember the simple acts of kindness, he said. “We are just spreading some hope and cheer as we travel around New Zealand. “I’ve made about six or seven videos now, I’m only learning, but the aim is to inspire people.” His latest video, which shows his brother, Cronulla Sharks halfback Fa’amanu Brown, telling his parents he’s been picked to play rugby for Samoa, was posted on Saturday. By yesterday, it had been viewed more than 10,000 times.

Compromise on cul-de-sac By Kristy Martin A Springlands woman who didn’t want her residential street turned into a cul-de-sac says she and Marlborough Roads have come to an amiable compromise. Marita Winstanley was outraged late last year when she discovered Purkiss Street, her home of over 30 years, would become a dead-end to make way for a new roundabout at the busy intersection of Boyce Street and Middle Renwick Road. Marlborough Roads has this week released final designs for the two new roundabouts and while Mrs Winstanley said she was not happy one entrance to her street will be cut off, she agreed a compromise had been reached. Purkiss Street will be open for traffic to enter and exit via Boyce Street, but vehicles going to or coming from Middle Renwick Road will have no access. Marlborough Roads said this should achieve most of the safety changes while not disadvantaging Purkiss Street residents. “I’m not happy (with the plan), but it’s a compromise,” Mrs Winstanley said.

BIRTHDAY FOR PICTON TOY LIBRARY Picton Toy Library will be hosting a teddy bears picnic to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It will be held at the Picton Miniature Railway, on the Picton Foreshore, between 11am and 3pm on Sunday. There will be a sausage sizzle going and spot prizes given away, and kids can have their faces painted if they wish. Entry is free.

The final design for the Boyce St roundabout.

She also had some concerns over how vehicles would enter her street from Boyce Street and exit onto Middle Renwick Road, but says Marlborough Roads was currently addressing those concerns. Work on the two Springlands roundabouts is expected to begin this month, with the second roundabout to be installed at the

intersection of Battys Road and Middle Renwick Road. Following community consultation, Marlborough Roads decided to keep some on-street parking for businesses between Colemans Road and Boyce Street. It had also revised some cycle lanes, pedestrian refuges and merge lanes.

Upset at holiday vandalism By Kristy Martin An elderly Blenheim woman has been left frustrated after vandals damaged her fence three times in one week. Hazel Crouchley, 80, says she awoke last Wednesday to find one section of her front fence had been pulled out and was lying flat on the footpath. A few days later, someone toppled the other side too and left the wooden structure lying on the footpath with nails sticking up. Then on Wednesday this week, Hazel discovered several of the palings had been kicked in. “It’s absolutely pointless,” the Snowden Crescent woman said. “Doing this, what satisfaction have you got?” Hazel has contacted police and is working with her insurance company, but would like to encourage anyone with information to come forward. She also asks her neighbours to remain vigilant. “We get a lot of foot traffic through here, but it’s probably just kids,” she said of the unprovoked attacks. Snowden Crescent resident Hazel Crouchley has had her fence vandalised three times in “It is school holidays.” one week.

Four young French-speaking Kiwis are needed to represent New Zealand at the Bastille Day Parade in Paris on July 14. “French President François Hollande has invited New Zealand to send two young women and two young men, aged between 18 and 24, to participate in the 2014 Bastille Day Parade,” said Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Christopher Finlayson. “They will join youth from around 70 other countries that were involved in the First World War. “France is using this year’s National Day to mark the upcoming centenary of the First World War.” Applications are open until May 12 and can be made online at http:// tinyurl.com/nzbastille

POLICE SEEK WITNESS Blenheim police are still investigating in incident in which a woman was found injured on Scott Street in the early hours of Sunday. The woman was found with injuries to her face and elbows about 2.45am and police are now asking the man who assisted her to come forward. Police say the man, who has a foreign accent, might be able to provide valuable information about the incident.

New owners for Annie’s

Local fruit leather manufacturer Annie’s has been bought out, but its receiver is happy with the outcome. Wakatu Incorporation’s Kono NZ bought the business, based in Grovetown, with an agreement reached after Annie’s went into receivership with PWC last year. The purchase was announced on Tuesday. PWC partner John Fisk said the sale would allow business to continue without a lot of disruption. “This is a good result for the Annie’s Marlborough employees, Kono NZ and the wider Marlborough community. “We were pleased to work with Kono NZ to finalise this sale, and are delighted the Annie’s business will be able to continue.” Kono NZ plan to continue using Annie’s to produce fruit leather. Kono NZ chief executive Don Everitt said Annie’s would be a natural fit. “The range of natural fruit bars made

by Annie’s fits well with the range of food and beverage brands owned by Kono NZ. “There are some great export opportunities for Annie’s in the consumer markets where natural and healthy products are highly valued.”

Perry’s final chapter By Adam Poulopoulos After 106 years selling books to the locals, Perry’s Book and Map Shop is closing its doors. The retail shop, on Arthur Street, has its final day on Saturday, May 10, but the press agency will continue to operate. Looking for a new challenge, owners Denis Jacques partner Ngaire Butland bought the store 19 years ago. Mr Jacques said he was looking forward to retirement. “Four years ago I made the decision, and now I’ve finally got around to it!” The shop began on central Denis Jacques from Perry’s Book and Map Shop Market Street in 1908, before shopped at the store in his coming here longer than we’ve youth, said the iconic nature of owned it. moving to its current site. “The three owners before Mr Jacques, a fourth-gen- the store was evident every day. “Some customers have been me still shop here. Everything’s bigger than it used to be.” A keen outdoorsman, Mr Jacques hopes he will have the opportunity to spend more time exploring in his retirement.

By Adam Poulopoulos After about 15 years in the business, Liz Valk (pictured) is branching out and starting fresh. Valk Designs officially opened for business yesterday, with work currently continuing on Mrs Valk’s new home office on Weld Street. Mrs Valk began in the design and printing business after leaving Marlborough Girls’ College. The business she worked for changed its name to printing.com three years ago, but after owner Alan Eskrick closed the doors, she had the choice to go back to full-time work for someone else, or maintain her part-time arrangement and work for herself. She said she decided to do the latter, to continue spending time with daughter Abi. “I’m really looking forward to it. I really wanted to be able to stay at home and have that flexibility.” Mrs Valk has retained all the graphic files from printing.com Blenheim and

will be focusing on four main aspects, including graphic design and print solutions. She has also started creating tattoo images, having done it for years as a hobby. “So many people come up with the image or text and it looks funky, and not in a good way. “It has to look good - it’s on your body forever.” Mrs Valk said the business would also focus on creating websites, especially for small-tomedium businesses. areas so your tickets will tell you where you need to go,” she said. With the high number of people

attending the show parking spaces will be filled quickly. “If you are coming in a big group

organise a place to all meet and arrive together,” she said. Cellphones must be turned off and no photos or videos are allowed to be taken. Billy’s show will run for approximately two and a half hours non stop so if people wish to take a drink in with them, only plastic bottles will be allowed. “Absolutely no glass what so ever,” she said. Although all tickets have been sold there is the chance that some tickets may be onsold so people can contact Alana closer to the time at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre on 520 8558 for more information.

Evening with Norm Hewitt

Story by Celeste Lodewyk Would you like to have dinner with former New Zealand Maori Rugby team captain and All Black Norm Hewitt? An opportunity not to be missed, Norm will be coming to Blenheim for a fundraising dinner to benefit the Marlborough Parents Centre on June 6. The dinner is titled ‘An Evening with Norm Hewitt’ and will have Norm talking about his life and what has shaped him to be the father he is today. Tickets are now on sale for the dinner which is raising funds for a new venue for the centre to hold its many education classes including antenatal. MPC committee member Melissa Martin applied to Speakers New Zealand to have Norm come to speak at the dinner and said she was blown away at his ‘generosity’. “Norm phoned me one night and said part of his life philosophy was to give back once or twice a month, so he donated his time to us,” she said. The fundraising dinner will be held at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre and will include a three course meal, raffles throughout the night and a very special auction. Norm will be auctioned off to the highest bidding table. The winner will have Norm sit with them for the evening. Tickets cost $80 per person or $640 per table (eight per table) and can be purchased by emailing info@marlboroughparentscentre.co.nz

Twyford speaks on Marlborough housing By Adam Poulopoulos A Labour politician believes Blenheim is being penalised for the Government’s failure to fix the Auckland housing crisis. Housing spokesperson Phil Twyford (pictured left) was speaking at Crossroads on Tuesday evening about the party’s view on housing in

Marlborough and around the country. Mr Twyford said not enough new houses in Auckland had led to a higher interest rate. “Homeowners in Marlborough are paying the price through a rising interest rate for the Government’s failure to fix the Auckland housing crisis.”

He said putting together enough money to afford a new home was difficult for people in Blenheim. “The median house price in Blenheim is about $355,000, but you need to scrape up about $70,000 before the bank talks to you. “The median income in Blenheim is $27,000, so how

easy is it going to be to save $70,000 while paying rent and possibly looking after kids? “It’s not going to happen.” Mr Twyford’s visit came on the back of Labour’s housing policy, which they hope will lead to 100,000 new entrylevel houses in ten years after the elections. “Too many children are

growing up in cold, damp houses and getting sick,” he said. Labour also plans to improve the quality of rental properties with their Healthy Homes Guarantee, and tighten regulations on overseas investors buying property.

Tom Driffill (14) shows off his abilities at the Blenheim skate park this week, enjoying the last of the school holidays with his friends. Asked what he and his friends have been doing these holidays he said; "I visited the Christchurch skate park and spent a lot of time

here at the Blenheim skate park". He also said he wished upgrades would be made to the skate park which would make it more fun for all ages during the holidays. Term two of school resumes on Monday. Photo by Celeste Lodewyk

Grave concerns in Seddon The Mayoral Relief Fund for Seddon could be extended to cover repairs to headstones in the Seddon Cemetery that were damaged in last year’s earthquakes. Marlborough councillors discussed the proposal this week after learning the fund still has a balance of $12,558 after the majority of applications were processed. The initial idea came from the Awatere Community Trust and several Seddon people who have family members buried at the

cemetery. A total of 49 headstones have been identified as either displaced or damaged by the 2013 earthquakes. It was proposed that people

should be able to apply for a one-third contribution from the fund toward the cost of repairing a headstone. Mayor Alistair Sowman said the Mayoral Relief Fund trustees would have to consider any such application, but he agreed it would be one way to distribute any remaining funds in a manner that would have communitywide value. Once the proposal has been confirmed, more details, including a timeframe for applications, will be publicised.

Storm repairs costly Damage caused by last month’s storm and flooding will cost in the region of $700,000 to repair. Marlborough Roads advised the Marlborough District Council Assets and Services Committee of the figure in a meeting on Tuesday. Between half and to thirds of the money will go toward repairing the Awatere Valley Road, with Port Underwood and roads in Kenepuru Sound making up the bulk of the remainder. Some of the money will also be used to clear trees that fell on d’Urville Island. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said most of the work would be completed in the next two months, but some would stretch into the next financial year. With the money spent in this cleanup, it would take the amount spent to fix damage in Marlborough this year to about $2 million overall.

GARDENING

FARMING

THIS WEEK

Warmest growing season in 15 years Blenheim recorded its fourth highest-ever April rainfall figures this year, putting a dampener on the end of harvest for local winegrowers. However, we still had our warmest growing season in 15 years and no April frosts, says Plant & Food Research scientist Rob Agnew who collects climate data at the Blenheim Meteorological station at Grovetown Park. Over the past 28 years, Blenheim has averaged 1.2 ground frosts in April, but this is the third consecutive year that no ground frosts have been recorded. The average temperature for the growing season, September to April, was 15.6°C; which was 0.5°C above the long-term average and the warmest growing season of the past 15 years. This was despite higher than average rainfall. The 123.7 hours of sunshine for April was only 66 per cent of the

Branch out with brassicas As the weather continues to cool, I bet many of you are starting to wonder what winter veges you should be planting. This year when you’re selecting your tried and true broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts seedlings why not branch out and try one of the more interesting members of the brassica family – kale. Of course many of you will already be experts at adding kale to your stir-frys and salads but I bet equally as many of you didn’t even realise you could eat this vegetable, often grown for animal feed. If you’re an old hand at nurturing the regular type of kale, be sure to check out our cavalo nero variety, which looks like a cross between cabbage and kale and is perfect for making tasty chips. Before you get planting make

long-term average for April, which is 187.7 hours, while the 149.8 mm of rain in April was 288% of the long-term monthly average. The rainfall beginning on April 8 had also boosted soil moisture from 17.1 per cent to 37 per cent. “The main period of soil moisture recharge in Marlborough is normally May to July when there is little evaporative demand, so 2014 has got a large head start in April,” Mr Agnew said.

sure you’re growing your seedlings somewhere different to where you last grew any other members of the brassica family to prevent your plants getting club root. Next, before you plant them dress the soil with some lime to sweeten it. Then, once you’ve got your bed ready, plant each seedling around 15cm apart. Growing them quite close together in clumps, as opposed

to rows, can create a quite nice visual affect. Try growing them, alongside rainbow beet, calendulas and any edible plants you find attractive, the length of paths or in patterns as you would with flowers. As always, there are plenty of great ideas on the internet if you try searching the words ‘edible landscape’. In around six to 10 weeks your kale should be ready to harvest. Simply pick the individual leaves as you need them. Lastly, to help prevent club root for next year, once you’ve harvested your brassicas, plant mustard seeds in the soil (while you rotate your crops). When the mustard has matured to around 10cm (when the leaves are soft), dig it into the soil. This will help get rid of any club root in the soil.

Pasta Shells with Garlicky Kale Ingredients: 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil 5 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes (or to taste) 10-12 oz. (10-12 cups, loosely packed) pre-washed baby kale, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup vegetable broth Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese 8 oz. small whole-wheat pasta shells, cooked to package directions Directions: Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Sauté garlic with red pepper about 2 minutes.

Ten nine-month-old lambs were taken from a paddock in Waitaria Bay between March 21 and April 30.

CUTTING IN Between April 27 and 30, a rideon lawnmower and a log splitter were taken from an address in Park Terrace.

TEEN ARRESTED A 16-year-old unemployed male has been arrested for breaching his bail. He was released back into the care of parents a short time later. Blenheim Youth Aid will be following up with the youth.

CINEMA RAID Overnight on April 29, the Mayfair Picture Theatre in Kaikoura was broken into and $1100 in cash taken from the safe.

Volleyball grant Volleyball in Kaikoura is set to get a major boost, with a project to expand coaching into local primary schools. Aided by a $2200 Kiwisport grant from Sport Tasman, Kaikoura Volleyball Club will launch a programme in July to

teach fundamental skills to children from Kaikoura Primary School, St Joseph’s School, Kaikoura Suburban School and Hapuku School. Students from Kaikoura High School will also take part.

Bringing up children is one of life’s greatest challenges; and so is starting a business. Some adventurous Kiwi women choose to do both, launching their own business while raising a family. These entrepreneurial mothers are being asked to come forward as part of the Fly Buys Mumtrepreneur Awards, a new scheme for all women who have set up a business while bringing up kids at home. From start-ups to companies gone global, the programme is open to businesses from any industry and is awarding 10,000 Fly Buys points to category winners and an additional 30,000 Fly Buys points to the Supreme Mumtrepreneur of the Year Award winner – enough for anything from a complete technology overhaul or return flights and accommodation for an overseas family holiday.

To apply or nominate someone who deserves an award, see mumtrepreneurawards.co.nz. Entries close on June 20.

Rebounds and racism We are only reaching the end of the first round in the NBA playoffs, but already, this year’s edition has had everything. Only the defending champion Miami Heat have advanced without dropping a game, as the 14 other teams have slugged it out in a spate of overtime games and buzzer beaters. However, despite all the excitement on the court, alleged racist comments by LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling have overshadowed everything and threaten to dominate headlines over the next couple of months. During a conversation posted on the TMZ website between Sterling

and his mistress, he demanded she didn’t bring African-Americans to watch the team’s games. Several sponsors have severed ties with the team, and the NBA has banned him for life. The Clippers almost boycotted game four of their series with Golden State too. It’s hard to look past such conduct, but the games themselves have been so good they’re still getting a decent chunk of attention. Normally, finals games in any sport are a bit underwhelming, as both teams err on the side of caution. Teams get scared of making mistakes, which inhibits them, but

occasionally, there’s a game that goes down as a classic. Last year’s NBA finals between the Spurs and Heat are one example, as the teams slugged it out over seven games. Federer and Nadal’s final at Wimbledon in 2008 was so good Pete Sampras claimed the game “transcended the sport.” On the other hand, the All Blacks-France World Cup final in 2011 was nerve-shredding, but more because it was close rather than the quality of the game. Let’s hope the racism scandal is dealt with in a way it doesn’t detract from the closest playoffs series in years.

SPORTS TALK With ... Adam Poulopoulos

PLOUGHING This year Blenheim is hosting the 59th New Zealand Ploughing Championships. The event takes place on May 10 and 11 at Spring Creek. For more information and registration forms visit the NZ Ploughing website.

RUGBY Round two of the Bayleys Tasman Trophy takes place on Saturday, with Harlequins playing at Lansdowne Park, and Waitohi hosting Renwick. The other three Marlborough teams head over to Nelson for their games. Waitohi, Central and Moutere all won their games last weekend when the Marlborough teams played each other.

HALF MARATHON Late entries are being taken for the Nelson Shoe Clinic half marathon this weekend. The event takes place on Sunday, commencing from Saxton Field. Runners can also run a quarter marathon or 5km if they wish. For more information visit the athletics Nelson website.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS Special Olympics Marlborough is gearing up for another big day in the pool on Sunday. Their swimming ribbon day is being held at the Woodbourne Air Force Pool, beginning at 9am. Fif t y competitors f rom Marlborough and Nelson will be competing in the event. The swimming, which will include relays and both short and long-distance races, is expected to finish about noon. The ribbon presentation will be held at the Renwick Domain following the swimming. Special Olympics Marlborough host six events each year, each for a different sport.

The kids take a break during the final day of the camp on Wednesday.

Youngsters show off skills Sixty young rugby players descended on Lansdowne Park for the Farmlands Mini Makos School Holiday Rugby Clinic earlier this week. The meet was run by Tasman Makos coaches and players, who taught the kids skills like catching, passing, kicking, and how to take the ball into contact. Tasman Rugby Union rugby development officer Chris Goodman said the meeting had generally gone well. "It's been all good, apart from the weather early on Tuesday, when we had to start indoors." For the young players, their season begins this weekend, and Goodman said it was a good time to revisit the game and upskill. Right: Corbin Mitchell, 8, from Renwick School, and St Mary’s School pupils Jimmy Morris, 9, and Sam Bugler, 9.

Redbacks set for success By Adam Poulopoulos A spike in player numbers has the MHD Redbacks volleyball team well-placed heading into their Southern Volleyball League season. The Marlborough senior women's rep team has their first assignment in Blenheim on Saturday, May 10. The six southern teams play each other, with the top two teams qualifying for nationals later in the year. Redbacks player/coach/manager Abbey Greenwood said with the failure to reach nationals last year out of the way, there was a

focus on putting things right. "Last year was a bit of a disappointment but we really lacked numbers. It was a bit of a shambles really. "I've made it clear to all the girls our main focus is to perform well at each tournament to get qualification." The Redbacks have picked up some of the Nelson players after their team folded, while several others have returned to the area and elected to play. Greenwood said their experience, coupled with young stars like Alex Parker and Eloise

van Velthooven, would give the team a nice blend. "In the past we've had to rely on mainly schoolgirls to fill the team, but it's good to have a bit more seniority in the team, as the step up from college volleyball can be too much to handle. "We've got a few who have been playing for 10-12 years." Greenwood said the team had two trainings in Blenheim each week, and weekend training with the Nelson-based players whenever possible.
